Sia – The Greatest | Tutorial

Sia keeps outdoing herself in the field of chart topping pop music. Hit after hit come from her hand and/or throat and I am quite positive that with her (now still new) “The Greatest” she is again shooting for peak position.

After hearing the arguably biggest name in current popular music – Sia play her newest release “The Greatest” at Apple’s iPhone 7 launch event (HOW does a company accomplish people to voluntarily watch a 2hr “show” that is essentially just an outrageously extensive commercial for their product… amazing), I figured this might very well be one that a lot might be interested to learn.

In all honesty, I thought it was quite a cool tune myself as well. Poppy. Sure. Simple. To an extent. 4 chordish again. You know it. Corny? Stop it!

You gotta hand it to the woman. It’s quite the accomplishment in and of itself to keep coming up with strong melodies and hooks, using the same old beaten down chord progressions like this I VI III VII (in minor).

In this weeks tutorial I’ll show you:

  • Staccato left hand chord accompaniment, to replicate the playing on marimba (sound)
  • Not one, but two cool right hand melodic riff hooks.
  • How to play those simultaneously and don’t get lost in translation.
  • Proof that Sia truly is the master of the pop melody, yet again writing a killer tune on a repetitive four chord loop.

Used chords below the vid.

Have fun.

Cheers, Coen.
