Hi and welcome to the second Lick of the Week (LOTW), a series of concept lessons which will go more in-depth into both the technical AND theoretical side of the "piano lick."
Just like last time, we'll be taking a look at the technique itself and the concept so you can use and RE-use the piano lick in many musical situations (a very important aspect of Piano Hacking - the overall approach to playing music here @ Piano Couture).
Lesson | contents
In this lesson we'll:
- Take a close look at the "alternating thirds" technique, that will form the basis of our lick this week
- Combine that with a swift roll of the hand, which unbelievably impressive (go show off! 😉 ) yet super easy to do
- Add in some "pentatonism"
- End with a bit of end/re-harmonization to land safe and sound on the home chord - and a few different ways to interpret this harmonization
The Piano Lick in this LOTW is built actually out of two techniques that are both very common - yet super functional - in blues piano, combined with the o-so-familiar-in-blues (and all contemporary styles) pentatonic scale.
As I've lightly touched last time, the blues, it's techniques and approach is where many licks come from. Heck, it's where most of contemporary music comes from!
Ohyeah, I also tried out a new video format! How about that?
Please, in the comments below, let me know what you think and which piano lick you'd like to learn!
Cheers, Coen.
Please send me the first LOTW! Love the second one!!
